[25 Feb 2010|05:18pm] retrospectively Hello, everyone. I'm a senior this year. I didn't apply early decision anywhere because I had to retake my SAT II's in December, so it's irritating to sign up for AP exams when I won't even know which ones transfer. Is anyone else having this problem? A lot of my friends are signing up for all of the exams and will cancel the ones that their future colleges won't accept later on. I feel like this is such a waste of money, especially since I'd be taking like 7. A majority of my schools take 5's on AP Calc BC but my high school only offers AB, so I guess I'm self-studying it! *gulp* What AP classes and exams are you guys taking or self-studying for this year, and what are your reasons for taking the exams? I have a genuine interest in taking the AP studio art test just to see what I can get on it, but otherwise they're just going to be for college credit. 9 comments|post comment

AP Environmental Science [10 Sep 2009|07:28pm] anyonefortennis Hi all, I'm a senior this year and due to scheduling conflicts, I wasn't able to take the Honors Environmental Science Course I wanted to take. Environmental is a genuine interest of mine and I was thinking of challenging the AP. Not so much for the credit, but the test as proof that I studied it on my own. that way I would have something to write about in the "Is there any other information about your academic career you would like to share?" on the application, to account for a *somewhat* easier senior schedule. Has anyone on this community ever challenged it before? If not, and you've taken it, do you think that it would be too much to absorb on my own? I have a great relationship with the teacher so I could probably get extra help, and i've been in an Envirothon club for the last four years so i have a decent background knowledge. My only other AP this year is Chemistry so it's not like I'm booked solid. Thoughts? (to the person two posts below me, it was language that got in the way for me too :p) 1 comment|post comment

[05 Aug 2009|06:43pm] blergg I'm a senior in high school, I start school on Monday. I talked to my counselor today, and I have to choose between AP Environmental Science and AP Spanish. Would taking one over the other be better for college admissions? (I mean just in general - I'm majoring in theatre, so I don't think one over the other would matter much if one was judging by the material each class deals with). I've always been told that colleges like when you take a language for all four years, but I don't know. And when it comes to taking the AP tests, I'm almost certain that I wouldn't take the one in Spanish (because the Spanish teachers here are bs and I've hardly learned anything in the three years I've taken it, even if I get a good grade in the class it won't mean anything because the teacher is easy as heck), and I'm almost certain that I would take the AP test for APES. The tests don't matter as much to me, though, I do AP mostly for the higher gpa to help with getting scholarships and financial aid. Thanks! 2 comments|post comment

Physics and English Language + Comp, general testing question [18 May 2009|05:52pm] anyonefortennis Who else took English Language and Composition? Physics B? Also, I was looking at the score breakdown for all tests from last year and was wildly confused at how the curve works. It's obviously not a bell curve; there was maybe one test out of all of them that had students predominantly scoring three. most were skewed towards either one or five. AP English Lit/Comp [10 May 2009|09:41am] megalixer So, since we're past the two-day no discussion rule for the essays . . . what book did you guys use? I thought that the prompt was so . . . well, open - you could have applied that to just about any book ever written! Anyways, I used Hedda Gabler, General Gabler's guns, and how their symbolism of masculine authority displayed Hedda, Eilert, and Brack's relationship with society's gender roles via each respective character's interaction with the guns. I think I did well enough on it, it was probably my best essay. What about the other essays? [04 May 2009|06:27pm] xmorethanasongx Background information: My school has us take our AP exams in the back rooms of a church. During the multiple choice section of my gov exam, several things happened. First, the exam proctor kept talking on her phone. She'd go to the stairwell (which echoed) to talk, and then would come back into the room to continue proctoring. This happened several times. One of the times while she was on the phone, loud church music suddenly started playing in the room through the overhead speakers. She didn't notice it because she was on the phone, and it startled all of us, so a few students stood up and started trying to figure out how to turn it off. She stuck her head into the room (still on the phone) and got mad at us, not realizing the music was on. We finally got it to turn off using a random dial on the wall. Once she realized why we were all distracted, she asked us if we wanted to file an incident report, but we said no because we weren't sure what would happen to our exams if such a report was filed. So we continued testing. Later on, one of the students showed up late, so she had a whole whispered conversation in the stairwell (which echoed!) with him. He finally left; she came back into the room and called time. I usually finish the multiple choice section about five to ten minutes early; this time, I didn't answer fifteen questions. I am fully confident that this was due to the interruptions (I was sitting in the chair directly next to the stairwell). Is this something I should report? If so, how? What would the ramifications of this be? Or should I just suck it up and deal with it? All of this occurred during the multiple choice section; there were no interruptions during the free response. AP Calculus [25 Feb 2009|09:27pm] euphoriatiic For those of you who have taken AP Calculus, What AP test do you recommend taking, the AB test or the BC test, and why? My teacher is recommending the AB test but I was planing to take the BC one instead but now i'm not sure. By the way, I have the class everyday year round so I have taken both AB and BC, and math is not my strong point. While I'm at it, what are your thoughts on re-taking an AP test? AP Music Theory [15 Oct 2008|12:37am] flutistically Hey guys quick question. I made a 4 on the AP Music Theory exam, which is cool and all. But I've been wondering whether or not it's wise to actually take advantage of this college credit and skip freshman theory in college. My reason for concern is because I took AP Music Theory my junior year. I am now a senior, and not in a music theory class. And on top of that I would not have music theory my freshman year in college. And it kind of scares me to think of going into a college sophomore level theory class after two years of not having theory on a regular basis. Question is, has anyone out there experienced something similar to this? Would you suggest that I just go ahead and take freshman theory even though I tested out of it just to be safe, or should I opt for saving (a good amount of) money by just skipping that class altogether? AP US Govt Prep books. [04 Sep 2008|07:41pm] notso_koolaid My AP Gov teacher recommends that we get a prep book for the course. I've heard that a lot of people recommend the Princeton Review prep book for this specific test, but my teacher says that he doesn't recommend it at all, says it "lacks substance," and instead vouches for Barron's and Peterson. Just out of curiosity... [29 Aug 2008|08:18pm] inside0ut_89 What are your standards for AP grades? It varies with different subjects, but in general, a 3 is an "eh, not bad" grade for me, and 4's and 5's are reasons to celebrate. Overall, I'm pretty proud of the fact that I got all 4's (besides one 5) on my AP tests, although with my AP Gov test, I definitely should have gotten a 5 with all the effort I put in. Anyways, I've noticed that in this community, some people consider 4's as disappointing. Is it because you set higher standards? Is there anyone who gets excited about passing the tests with a 3? And another question out of curiosity, how many AP's did you take each year? [18 Aug 2008|10:53pm] chessiedoe I will be a sophomore this coming year and have signed up for both US History and Language and Composition. Though this most likely has been asked before, what are the "best" review books for these classes, in your opinion? I've heard Princeton Review and Barrons suggested for APUSH and APLAC, respectively. Also, I'm planning on taking Literature and Composition as well as Calculus or Statistics in my junior year. Four years of English are required at my school and, quite frankly, at that point there wouldn't be much else available to take. As for the math, after sophomore year I'll have taken all math classes available save AP Calculus and AP Statistics. Could someone please give some advice on which math class might be easier, more enjoyable and/or more beneficial? It'd also be great to get some opinions on any of the other classes, too. Just found this community today [17 Aug 2008|07:33pm] thereallizfresh and i start my first AP classes ever tomorrow. i wasn't at all scared about AP US History until i read this comminuty. but that's life. i was signed up for AP Bio as a sophmore but i quickly put an end to that after the summer assignment kicked my butt. i now have AP Enviromental Science. how hard are the AP exams, what prep books work best, and is AP Env really slacker science or was i lied to?
